Opportunities for international scientific collaboration The Royal Societys international programme provides grants for scientific research visits to and from the UK. UK scientists apply direct to the Society. Overseas scientists apply through the Societys partner organisations overseas where formal exchange arrangements exist, or the UK host may apply for grants for visiting colleagues. Grants are for individuals and the main criteria are the quality of the individual and the proposed scientific research. Grants are intended to provide for accommodation and subsistence. Some will also include the cost of international airfare. ![]() For example, if you are interested in a joint project with Japan click on J in the country index, go to the Japan line in the index and click on the ![]() ![]() Types of grant Study visit grants are short-term visits generally between two weeks and three months, the key objectives being to enhance the research capabilities of individual scientists, develop international collaborative links, enable participation in international programmes and preserve high quality science. Fellowship grants are aimed at young scientists and provide an opportunity to do research in a different country for up to two years. Fellowships are available under a variety of schemes operated in association with NATO, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, the KC Wong Education Foundation, British Petroleum Company plc, the Sino-British Fellowship Trust and others. Joint project grants provide funding over 24 months (for some countries 36 months) for exchange visits to take place in connection with a bilateral research collaboration between a UK and overseas research group.
