Research grants

The scheme provides grants of
up to a maximum of £10 000, including VAT where applicable, to individuals for research projects of ’timeliness and promise’ in any scientific or technological discipline within the remit of the Royal Society, ie the natural sciences, including mathematics, engineering science, agricultural and medical research, the scientific aspects of archaeology, geography, experimental psychology and research in the history of science. Provision is intended to complement that provided by the host department/institution where an individual’s research capacity can be significantly enhanced by such provision. Grants will be made through host institutions.


Grants of up to a maximum of £5000, including VAT, are awarded to assist with the publication of scholarly works in the history of science.

Closing dates
Applications may be made at any time. However, the following closing dates (and corresponding notification dates) will normally apply:

Closing dates: 1 April 1 November
Notification: August March
Closing dates are strictly adhered to.
