University Research Fellowships

These fellowships provide extended support for high-quality research workers to work in university departments, with the expectation of achieving permanent posts (in a UK university or industry) within 6 years.

Subjects Covered: All natural sciences (including mathematics and engineering but excluding social sciences).

Eligibility: Outstanding scientists under the age of 40, with between two and seven years of postdoctoral experience by 1 October 2000. Applicants over 40 may be considered under very exceptional circumstances, but they should contact the Research Appointments department for advice before submitting an application. Persons holding substantive posts in universities in the UK will not be considered. Candidates must be either British citizens, or EU citizens, who are either currently employed in the UK or who have been resident in the UK for a continuous period of three years, other than for the sole purpose of receiving full-time education.

Length of Tenure: Five years in the first instance (possibly renewable in two instalments up to 10 years).

Place of Tenure: Universities and higher educational institutions in the UK.

Number Offered: Varies. About 50 in 2000.

Frequency: Once a year. Advertised in Nature, THES, The Lancet , other relevant journals and on the Internet.

Value: Salaries on the university lecturers' A/B scale for non-clinical academic and related staff with research expenses and special fund allowances.

Closing Date: 7 January 2000.
