Rutherford Scholarships

Subjects covered: Rutherford Scholarships are intended to encourage young science graduates of exceptional promise and ability. They will be awarded for research in any branch of the natural sciences, but if there are candidates of similar merit, preference will be given to experimental physics.

Eligibility: Applicants must be graduates of a Commonwealth university, and under age 26 on 1 October in the year of appointment. The scholarships will not normally be awarded to graduates who have already held a senior research award.

Length of Tenure: Three years. May not be held concurrently with other awards or income except with consent of the Society.

Place of Tenure: The appointment is to be held in some part of the Commonwealth other than that in which the candidate graduated.

Number Funded: Two.

Frequency: As vacancies occur.

Value: £8,200 (reviewed annually). Additional allowances will be granted for travel, research expenses and university fees, although candidates from outside the United Kingdom are expected to apply for Overseas Research Students awards.
