Industry Fellowships Scheme

This scheme, funded by EPSRC, BBSRC, PPARC, Rolls Royce plc and the Royal Society, provides opportunities for industrial scientists and engineers to carry out research or course development in a university or polytechnic, and provides similar opportunities for corresponding academic employees to undertake a project in industry.

Subjects Covered: All natural sciences (including mathematics and engineering but excluding social sciences).

Eligibility: Applicants can be of any nationality and should be a mid-career stage. They should hold a PhD or be of equivalent status and should hold either a substantive academic post in an institute of higher education in the UK or be employed as a scientist, mathematician or engineer in an industrial organisation in the UK.

Length of Tenure: Six months to two years. Part-time appointments are permitted.

Place of Tenure: Must involve transfer between industry and an academic institution or vice-versa.

Number Offered: Varies-generally about eight each year at present.

Frequency: Twice yearly.

Value: The fellow's salary only will be met during the secondment by the Society; the parent employer continues to pay national insurance and pension contributions.
