How to apply

Answers on the application form should be printed and be self-contained. They must not require reference to other papers. Additional enclosures will not be considered in the assessment of applications.

Where there is insufficient space, answers should be continued on no more than a single separate sheet which should be clearly marked with the applicant's name.

An application form can be downloaded from this page or is available from the Society. Forms sent to applicants will be accompanied by these notes and by an acknowledgement card. Either a stamped and addressed acknowledgement card or a stamped addressed envelope should be sent in with the application form if receipt of form is to be acknowledged.

One copy only of the application needs to be submitted. Some or all of the information will be held on computer and the Society reserves the right to utilise and publish information on:
the name of the applicant
the academic institution, department and address
the value of any grant made
the subject and title of the meeting

Applications are not considered if the applicant is in breach of any of the terms of the Society's grants,

The judging of applications takes into account:
the quality of the applicant as shown by career progression and rating of the reviewer,
the quality of their publications,
the standing of the conference,
the level of the applicant’s contribution to the conference (as appropriate to their seniority),
whether the applicant has planned any visits to local scientific institutions before or after the conference which add scientific value to the visit in relation to the sum requested,
any additional comments made by the reviewer.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by letter within 8 weeks of the closing date.

Part A
1. Name in full: this entry will be used for all correspondence. Please indicate your title and enter your forenames and surname, in that order, in the appropriate spaces. Please tick the box if you are a Fellow of the Royal Society.
2. This address will be used for all correspondence.
3. Present appointment: please give the title of your current post. Commencement date: please give the date your present appointment commenced.
4. Date of birth: enter date in order day, month, year.
7. Brief statement of scientific career: please include key posts held and research experience gained.
10. Dates of meeting: please give the start and finish dates of the meeting - not the dates of your proposed visit.
Subject: please circle the most appropriate letter (and number for group A) to indicate which of the following groups of subjects best covers the meeting you wish to attend:
A1 - mathematics, statistics and computing
A2 - physics, astronomy and crystallography
B - chemistry
C - engineering science and materials science
D - earth sciences, physical geography and scientific archaeology
E - molecular biology (including biochemistry, biophysics and genetics)
F- cellular biology (including immunology, virology, bacteriology and cellular pathology)
G - systems biology (including physiology, pharmacology, behavioural sciences and medical sciences)
H - organismal biology (including zoology, botany, population genetics, ecology, field surveys and taxonomy)
I - history of science
12. Place of meeting: please fill in both the country and the town in which the meeting is being held.
13. Dates of visit: enter start and end dates in order day, month, year.
14. Type of contribution: if your paper or poster has not been accepted at the time of application, please notify the Society as soon as it is.
16. Please enter all sums in whole pounds sterling.
17. Applicants are expected to show that they are seeking support. Please enter all sums in whole pounds sterling.
Pending applications: applicants should inform the Society of any changes in this item, whether to the financial advantage or otherwise of the applicant.
18. Please enter the sum requested from the Royal Society in whole pounds sterling.
19. Signature and date: please sign the application form; unsigned forms cannot be processed.


Part B
An applicant who is not a Fellow of the Royal Society should arrange for this section to be completed by a person of high standing in the applicant’s field well acquainted with the scientific work of the applicant. This person should then forward the application directly to the Royal Society.
