The meaning of the term Tradition must be examined carefully. Normally it is understood as something not written which is "handed down" to us by former generations. The tradition contains "thruth", usually without documentary evidence, that regards a great deal of matters. This interpretation is too general and leads to numerous and justified criticism, as it tends to pay attention to the past and give importance to a historical aspect, normally without documentary evidence. But the existential interpretation is much more important, especially on the esoteric level : through all time man is always in the same relation with the life. Therefore, what is handed down is not so much the contents of experiences lived by other human beings, as rather their way to confront the Life itself. By means of these testimonies one proposes for the present something already lived in the past by others, but still perceivable in an analogical way by present men. |
