"Of making many books there is no end."  So says the Preacher in the Volume of the Sacred Law (Ecclesiastes 12:12).  And his words are still true!  One of the major booksellers on the World Wide Web has nearly a million and a half titles on his list.  But in the last few years something new has been added.  Many volumes are now "machine readable."  We have "talking books" that are recorded on tape.  The first fifty years of the Philalethes magazine are accessible on a compact disk, which can be read on a computer.  The full text of the Bible is available on the Internet.

Do these new developments mean that the printed word is obsolete?  Not quite.  As well as going from print to machine, on occasion things can go the other way.  For example, there is one writer who put some of his talks and research papers on his website.  And quite a number of those who saw them suggested that they should be collected and made into a book.  After all, a book can go with you practically anywhere, and you don't need a machine to read it!
