Procedures for awarding medals and awards Since 1996 the procedures for the awarding of medals, prize lectureships, international prizes and international lectures have been as follows: 1 In January the President writes to all Fellows inviting nominations for the various medals, prize lectures, international prizes and international lectures to be awarded that year. Nominations must be received by 15 February and be accompanied by a 200-word statement presenting a case for the candidate (excluding international prizes). A full list of all medals/lectures/prizes due for award is provided. Nominations remain valid for five years only. In the event of a medal or prize lecture being made, all other nominations in the same name automatically lapse. 2 Nominations received by 15 February are considered by two committees (Physical Sciences Awards Committee, and Biological Sciences Awards Committee) chaired by the Physical and Biological Secretaries. Recommendations are made to Council. Recommendations may be made for nominations to be transferred to different awards in the following year. 3 Council (a) receives the recommendations of the two Awards Committees for those awards falling entirely on either the A side or the B side and (b) considers the recommendations of the Awards Committees for those awards falling on both the A side and the B side, and accordingly selects medallists for the year and lecturers for two years hence. 4 The committees identify suitable candidates and citation writers for international prizes. This is done on receipt of the appropriate documentation from the prize headquarters. In most cases, the proposer is requested to prepare the relevant documentation in support of the candidate with support from the Society. The President is required to sign any submission made on behalf of the Society. 5 Awards may not be made to any person who is a member of Council at the time when Council decides who shall be the recipient. 6 Awards may not be made to any person on the committees at the time when the committees make their recommendations to Council. |
