Born 1923 in Belarus and immigrated to Israel in 1934. Politically active from the age of 16, he was elected Secretary of the Labour Youth Movement in 1943. Head of Israel's navy in 1948 and at the end of the war, Director of the Defense Ministry's delegation in the United States, during which time he studied at the New York School for Social Research and at Harvard. Director-General of the Ministry of Defense 1953-59; masterminded the Sinai Campaign in 1956; Elected to the Parliament 1959-present; Minister of Defense 1974-77; Prime Minister 1984-86; Minister of Foreign affairs 1992; Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 Prime Minister 1995-96. |
