The Warden's house in the Mint
Newton became Warden of the Royal Mint in April 1696
and moved to London to take up the appointment. Presumably at first he lived
in the Warden's House inside the Tower of London. (By November 1696 he had
moved to a more pleasant house at
88 Jermyn Street.)
The Warden's house, along with the other Mint buildings, stood in the narrow
street between the inner and outer curtain walls, and is marked on a plan
of 1701 as being opposite the Jewel Tower (now Martin Tower) against the
north part of the outer curtain
(Corres, IV, Plate III.)
