Sites of Recoinage Mints

 One of Newton's duties as Warden of the Mint, was to create the temporary English mints listed below. After the union with Scotland in 1707, Newton became involved with the Edinburgh mint, as it attempted to produce coins to the English standard.

  • Hurstbourne Park
    Seat of Lord Portsmouth and home of the Portsmouth collection of manuscripts before the scientific papers were donated to Cambridge and the remainder later sold. Hurstbourne itself was sold earlier this century and Lord Portsmouth's seat is now Farleigh House (which is the current location of the remaining Newtonian items in the Earl's possession, including the 1689 Kneller portrait.
