Bust of Newton in Leicester Square

Leicester Square is now famous for large cinemas and for the London premiers of feature films. It was originally laid out in 1665 and the public Leicester Square Gardens were opened in 1874, with flower beds, lawns and busts of famous residents of the area. The bust of Newton is by William Calder Marshall and stands near the Newton Gate at the south west corner of the gardens. It has been seriously eroded by the weather. The left hand photograph is taken with the distinctive Swiss Centre in the background.

Newton lived in St Martin's Street on the south side of the square from 1710 to 1727.
