SECTION TWO:
CENTRAL AMERICA IN FLAMES

I come from a world that is anxious because the guerrilla and the soldier control the fire: young people are dying, brothers are dying, and the next day they will not even know why. 1

If only the dictators of yesterday alone were the ones capable of creating misery and mutilating hope. How absurd to try and cure the evils of the dictatorship of one extreme with a dictatorship of the other extreme! 1

The goals of this section are to remember the events that have taken place, in order to clarify for the visitor the reasons behind the destabilizations, the revolutionary movements, the state of society, of the economy and of life in the region. The horrors of war, the dead, poverty, desperation and various ideologies will also be covered in order to create a portrait of the Central American plight between 1950 and 1985.

Exhibit Components

  1. Information panels containing statistics, photographs, documents and objects that adequately illustrate the theme of the hall.

  2. Three video walls of eight units each, connected by a Secret Sound System. Upon these monitors will be projected the most heartrending and violent images of war, poverty, violence, arms, etc. in such a way that the visitor will intensely feel the effects of violent actions and will understand their magnitude.

  3. An interactive station made up of a computer with CD ROM and Touch Screen, in order to expand upon themes previously covered, thus establishing a dialogue between the computer and the user.

1. Dr. Oscar Arias Sánchez, December 11, 1987.
