Lee Kuan Yew was prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990. In this first volume of his memoirs, he describes the struggle for independence from the British, the fight against the communists, and Singapore's short-lived merger with Malaysia.
And he gives a rare glimpse into his personal life, including his secret marriage to the woman to whom he dedicates the book, his wife and partner Kwa Geok Choo.
The English edition of The Singapore Story is now in its fifth printing, with some 150,000 copies snapped up within two months of its launch in mid September 1998. Sales of the Chinese edition have also been very strong, with nearly 140,000 copies sold. |
